Chapter Fifteen

Lucas walked home with his hands deep in his pockets and his mind deep in thought. He’d never thought he’d see Cassie again, but like an angel, she’d popped up on that day, of all days, and had done a little doctoring, on his heart this time. It was something he rarely admitted to himself, but despite his former scandalous ways, he knew he was a hopeless romantic, and he really believed in love. He was lucky enough to have known real love before, but he was also privy to the devastation of losing it. He still thought about her, about Justine, and those thoughts were always painful.

Lucas didn’t want to get involved with Cassandra Pride. She was a little too easy to fall in love with. Besides, with his luck, he was sure something terrible would probably happen to ruin everything. Why even get started, even if I didn’t want to stop kissing her? Lucas asked himself, passing a hand over his beard.

Cassie, however, wasn’t one to be so easily brushed off. She’d insisted that he walk her home, and when he questioned her as to why, she’d sternly told him to be a gentleman because that was the least he owed her after that kiss.

That kiss! Man, that was crazy. Lucas had gotten lost in Cassie like he’d taken a tumble down a well. It was electric, as if they’d actually plugged into each other. Lucas couldn’t recall feeling like that ever before during a kiss, not even all those love kisses he’d shared with Justine or the sex-laden, sloppy, hungry smooches he’d engaged in with Simone. There’d been such voltage in that kiss with the good doctor that Lucas still felt the ghost of it on his lips.

He walked up the steps of his brownstone, feeling a little drunk and emotionally drained. As it turned out, Cassie only lived three blocks away, and his mind briefly wondered why he’d never bumped into her before, but he quickly put those thoughts out of his head. He wasn’t about to fuck with Cassandra Pride because he knew she was dangerous.

He let himself in, and his cell phone rang as he was taking off his coat; Delilah swooped back down on him with a vengeance. She’d called him six times, and his phone had vibrated in his pocket nonstop while he’d been in the bar with Cassie. Lucas got a bottle of water out of the fridge and put his phone on the counter. He watched it ring and drank his water. He wished she’d leave him alone, but he knew that wasn’t going to happen.

When his phone stopped ringing and the house fell silent, Lucas put the phone in his pocket and started for the stairs. The doorbell rang before he got to the first riser.

Lucas froze and stared at the door. His heart slammed in his chest, and his mouth went dry. Oh God! Not her! Not now! Not…Delilah. He stood there for a moment, very tempted to go upstairs and pretend he wasn’t there.
